Federico & his Family

Updated: May 4, 2020

Federico's party arrived at the Trail Break mid-afternoon and wondered what they could do until dinnertime. I'd planned hiking Shelburne Trail that morning but was held back by rain. By the time they arrived, the sun was shining so I naturally said, "Let's take a hike!" Federico, his wife Fiorina and their two children, Giulia and Jacopo, readily agreed, giving me an excellent opportunity to hike the trail nature denied me that morning.

Shelburne Trail is a 1.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail that follows Pea Brook. Located near Gorham, it features a waterfall and a deep swimming hole known as the Basin. Federico and his family — experienced hikers all — traversed the 321-foot elevation gain without stopping once to rest or catch their breath. I fell behind, to allow them to discover the Basin and falls on their own, a better approach than if I led there. I'm glad they chose to visit me in the White Mountains, and for the chance to hike a trail I was earlier denied. Fedrico said this about their stay at the Trail Break. “L'appartamento è pulito e situato a pochi minuti dal centro. Quello che ci ha colpito maggiormente sono stati la disponibilità e la gentilezza di Glen: ci ha fornito tutte le informazioni di cui abbiamo avuto bisogno, ci ha accompagnato in un trekking vicino a Gorham e ci ha preparato un'ottima colazione.”
